OK I am maybe getting a bit obsessed with the paisley now and should stop and read a book or something. You have to admit it’s pretty though. I like a that it’s so organic, and although there are recurring shapes you see in commercial patterns it’s really creative and not at all restrictive – except you have to be neat or it doesn’t work at all..

There was a book called “The Owl Service” by Alan Garner, which I read when I was young and it haunted me. A girl on her own in the attic of a dark house, compulsively tracing the owl patterns on an old plate, waiting for something terrible to happen..

Continuing my series of “People you might see in Luton”.. I’ve got a bit carried away. You won’t often see a girl in a short purple dress racing to save her dreadlocked friend from a shadow. I’m not saying it never happens though.

I coloured in the picture of my daughter I did yesterday. She will be extremely unimpressed about the overuse of lilac.

I’m toying with an idea for a graphic novel. It would be based in Luton.
I’ve sketched out one of the characters (the street is from bury park near the football ground)

My current technique is to sketch in pencil, scan in, whack the threshold up so the lines are black, and print out so I can experiment with different ways of colouring using the alcohol pens.

This is looking a bit more fluid and comic-y than trying to go over everything in ink..

Playing with the alcohol felt pens again.. this time I’ve done the outlines with a gel pen, after the ink has dried.

I drew this with a dip pen and purple ink, and coloured it with a wash and drops of turquoise.

I had to tidy this up a lot in GIMP because of the ink bleeding into the paper though – I think this cheap watercolour paper is a false economy! Next payday i shall be visiting a proper art shop.
